Description
Almost unrecognizable in this picture is the locomotive that would become the star of the Southern Railway Steam Program and current figurehead locomotive of the Norfolk Southern 21st Century Steam Program.
Built by Baldwin in 1911 for the Southern Railway as a 2-8-2 Mikado and numbered #4501 this engine worked the Southern until 1948 when it was sold to the coal hauling shortline Kentucky & Tennessee Railway in Stearns, Kentucky where it became their engine #12. It worked there until 1964 when it was displaced by a new fleet of ALCO S-1 diesels.
Sold to Paul Harriman she was moved from Stearns to Chattanooga, Tennessee under her own power where she was restored and became the face of the Southern Railway Steam Program again as Southern #4501. Today she resides at the Tennessee Valley Railway Museum in Chattanooga sporting her 1911 Southern freight black paint.

Well, ya learn something new every day. And goodness me, she had a long working life! I mean, 53 years is a long time, especially for an American engine.
